Since the Netherlands did boycott the Moscow Olympic Games Van Gent represented his National Olympic Committee at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Tallinn, USSR under the Dutch NOC flag. With Jan Willem van den Hondel as crew, Van Gent took the 4th place in the 470. Van Gent is a teacher of physical education by training. He runs a sailingschool in Rotterdam. ==Controversy== Several countries did boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics, others like France did not go since they found the competition devaluated.
